Art Department Assessment Policy The department has adopted a policy whereby the sketchbooks are collected in on a rotation basis of 4 – 6 weeks. This process allows us to assess the individual student’s progress in detail but also gives us a greater insight into their understanding of both the subject matter and skills that have been introduced to them during this time. Formative Assessment 1. The teachers in the department make every effort, each lesson, to give individual students an indication of the standard of their work in a positive manner through constant oral feedback. The majority of assessment is Formative and pupils are now asked to write these comments next to work that was discussed. Pupils are awarded a stamp , Working Above, Working Below and Working as Expected that is linked to their Creative Target Level which they are expected to achieve at the end of Year 9. 2. Group critiques / tutorials are used where pupils are asked to assess the work of their peers. The strength of this process lies within the comments / suggestions, however naïve, that the students themselves suggest. 3. Level Exemplar material- pupils are regularly shown examples of art work and discussions are conducted between teachers and students to explain the marking criteria in both the National Curriculum and GCSE Specification. 4. GCSE pupils are given regular tutorials where progress is checked and targets set to further improve their level of achievement. Summative Assessment 1. KS3 – Projects are assessed in detail using both evaluation and self assessment sheets. These are filled in by the students, with additional comments from their peers, with a final grade, comment and target being given by the teacher. The department works on giving two key assessment grades per year. 2. KS4 Target Setting – GCSE students are regularly given targets, with a specific time frame, in the form of a booklet to help monitor student’s progress and keep them on track.
