Why reading matters

Why does reading matter to us at The Earls?

At The Earls we are committed to empowering our students to become lifelong readers.

Reading is a skill that enables students to develop their learning across the wider curriculum and lays the foundations for success in future lines of study and employment, alongside promoting physical and mental wellbeing1.

We want all students to read fluently in order to be able to access the texts they will meet in lessons and examinations confidently and with resilience. To achieve this, we prioritise reading across all subject areas, ensuring that teachers have the knowledge and skills to develop students’ reading; dedicate curriculum time to the explicit teaching of reading and put in additional support as needed.

We also aim to foster a love of reading through the exploration of a rich variety of novels, participation in a wide range of extra-curricular activities and access to a well-resourced library.
