Project Gambia visit – Day 4

Project Gambia visit – Day 4

This morning we split into three groups. Some went to St Peter’s, some to Omega and some to Hanne Vibe school. It didn’t matter the location of school, all three settings involved working with wonderful African Children and their teachers, who are continually grateful and delighted with the work of The Earls High School Students and the charity Project Gambia!
A lovely part of today was handing out reusable menstrual packs to the older girls to enable them to continue their education when on their period. Without them, some girls miss 40 school days per year.
After lunch we revisited the Wisdom School to paint the three classrooms with educational displays. You will see from the photos that it is a work in progress, but we hope to conclude our work at this school tomorrow.
The students have loved spending time in the pool this afternoon and some walked down to the beach with Mrs Narrowmore and I to dip their toes in the Atlantic Ocean.

Project Gambia visit – Day 3

This morning we went to The Gambia Special School. Another very eye-opening experience for the students! They played all morning with the children, face painting, craft plates, painting, balloons, dancing, music drumming, and some rather fun sports activities.Quick stop back at the hotel for a bite of lunch before visiting the wisdom school to paint their three classrooms. Today we were white-washing the walls in preparation for another white-wash coat and then painting on some educational displays tomorrow and Saturday. After all the hard graft, a set of rather hot (and pretty filthy) students visited the ice-cream parlour to unwind and cool down from the day!I hope you like the photos!

Mrs Sevier writes…

The day started with an 8am breakfast meet, talk about eating with a view! The group split into two this morning, half went to Wisdom school and half went to St Peter’s. At both schools, your children wholeheartedly threw themselves into activities with the students who were aged between 2 and 6 years old.We reconvened for lunch at the hotel before heading out this afternoon to the village of Kotusilo situated on the edge of a rubbish tip. It was a hugely eye-opening experience and The Earls students would have made you all proud, we have brought a very caring, thoughtful and loving bunch of young people to The Gambia!

Project Gambia visit – Day 1

A group of students and staff from The Earls are in the Gambia this week, having spent recent months working hard to raise funds for the visit, and also collecting supplies to donate to the schools they will be working with here.

After a long and tiring journey, the students and staff were all very pleased to arrive at the hotel and spend a few hours recovering in the sunshine and sorting out their resources for the trip.

We hope to be able to share news and pictures here on the website each evening for the rest of the trip.

World Book day

World Book day

On Thursday 2nd March, we celebrated World Book Day with lots of activities. Students read a short story at the start of each lesson, The Man with the Yellow Face by Anthony Horowitz. The ‘Read for Good’ Readathon was launched with Years 7-9, where students can raise money for charity by reading.

Year 8 students were also given the exciting opportunity of taking part in a fantasy writing workshop with author (and former Earls pupil!) Richard Hayden and we were generously given several copies of his books ‘The Folly on the Hill’ and ‘The Statue of Mow’ for our library.  Book token to print

BBC Education Careers Tour

BBC Education Careers Tour

On Friday 10th February we had BBC Education Careers Tour come to The Earls. This event talked to students about careers in the creative industries. The tour had carefully selected local industry professional who were guided by a BBC host through a discussion focussed on careers in storytelling.  Storytelling is incredibly important to a whole range of different careers, such as marketing, News/Sport reporting, Law, Entrepreneurship, Design and so much more!
