We have just two weeks until the Easter holidays and around twenty working school days left before the Leavers' Assembly and Prom on 7th May. As a result of this I have outlined below the arrangements for structured revision that will be provided by the school.
An updated Revision Session Planner has been formulated which covers the whole of the exam period following the Leavers' assembly (7th May). The whole year group are expected to attend a compulsory revision week (11th May-14th May) where they attend their normal timetabled lessons (with the exception of Alton Towers on Monday 10th May). All departments will be tailoring these lessons with a clear focus on revision for the GCSE exams, covering exam techniques and completing past exam papers.
BTEC and Diploma students would have supervised personal revision time with their teachers and would need to bring in their own resources (e.g. revision materials/revision guides). PE lessons would be as normal during this week and College students would go to College as normal.
As this week is a whole year group activity, students will need to be in their normal school uniform throughout these four days. The usual high standards of attitude and behaviour would be expected, as at this stage students do not want their revision disrupted in any way.
After this week we will be timetabling subject specific revision sessions at the times shown. If the subject name alone is printed (e.g. Res Mat for Resistant Materials) it is expected that all students taking this subject attend the session.
Where there is the subject name and a 'T' this indicates that the subject department will be targeting a selected group and parents will be notified by letter if their son/daughter is in one of these target groups.
Where there is an 'SU' written by the subject this indicates that the session is open to all students, as long as they have 'Signed Up' with the department running that session. The procedure for sign up will be outlined before the 'Leavers Assembly'. Rooms for all sessions are indicated on the planner.
Boxes highlighted in yellow are the exams themselves and a number of departments have expressed an interest in laying on a 'Revision Breakfast' before the morning exam where food may be provided free of charge.
We would recommend parents/guardians read through the updated 'Revision Session Planner' and highlight the sessions that they are expected to attend or intend to sign up for. This planner should then be displayed somewhere prominent so that all members of our 'Learning Partnership' have access to this information. This should also help them plan their own personal revision sessions around the school based sessions.
After the compulsory revision week (finishing on Friday 14th May) the students can attend revision sessions in their own casual clothes. However, I must stress that when attending GCSE exams they should be back in full school uniform.
During home revision sessions they should be utilising their class books, revision guides, and internet based revision sites to guide and inform their revision. BBC GCSE Bite size (www.bbc.co.uk/schools/bitesize) is easily accessible as is the Black Country KS4 website (http://blackcountry.medialab.nl) and both provide some excellent additional resources for all subject areas.
The build up to the exams can be a stressful time for all parties concerned. Only through considered support (from both home and school) and well thought through structured revision sessions, will our students have the correct preparation to reach their target GCSE grades and fulfil their potential.
May we take this opportunity to thank our parents/guardians for your support over the past five years. We look forward to celebrating not only your son/daughters exam success on Tuesday 24th August but also the successful careers that lie ahead for them.
