YEAR 11 GCSE ART EXAM 2009 – Guidance Sheet 1 EXAM PAPER TOPIC – ‘SLEEP’ (DREAMS or NIGHTMARES) DREAM PROJECTS 1. ALICE IN WONDERLAND by Lewis Carroll Produce a painting or drawing, (which could include collage work) to illustrate part of this surreal, dreamlike story. Characters: Alice, The White Rabbit, The Cheshire cat, The Mad Hatter, The Dormouse, The March Hare, The Queen of Hearts, The Caterpillar, Tweedledum and Tweedledee. Artists to research: Ralph Steadman, Teesha Moore, John Tenniel, Arthur Rackman, Peter Newell. Suggested images to collect: Cats, rabbits, hares, caterpillars, Dormice, playing card designs, Flowers, plants, trees. 2. DREAM GARDEN Produce a painting or drawing (which could include collage work) of a dream garden that has fantasy plants and animals, mythical creatures or strange humans in it. Make them all as strange and creative as possible – the only limits are your imagination. Artists to research: Hieronymous Bosch (‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’), Garden of Eden images, Georgia O’Keefe, Teesha Moore, Brian Froud and Alan Lee’s ‘Faeries’ illustrations, Alan Aldridge (‘The Peacock Party’ and ‘The Butterfly Ball’), Salvador Dali (Surrealism), Gaudi (mosaics), Henri Rousseau. Suggested images to collect: birds of paradise, swans, horses (unicorns), flowers, plants, leaves, butterflies, castles, follies, clouds, heaven, Garden of Eden, lakes, pools, ponds. NIGHTMARE PROJECTS 1. NIGHTMARE GARDEN Produce a painting or drawing of a nightmarish garden that has strange plants and animals, evil creatures or grotesque humans in it. Make them all as scary and nightmarish as possible – the only limits are your imagination. Artists to research: Hieronymous Bosch (especially his images of grotesques and Hell.) H. R. Giger. Ralph Steadman (Gonzo), Anna Maria Pacheco, Surrealism, Max Ernst, Giorgio de Chirico, Gaudi (buildings). Gothic – (art, architecture, angel, clothes and beauty). Suggested images to collect: Insects, snakes, reptiles, scorpions, bats, owls and birds of prey, Gargoyles, cactus, goblins, pixies, trolls, grottoes, Goths. 2. NIGHTMARE MONSTERS Produce a drawing or painting, which could also contain collage work, that includes one or more characters from horror stories: Suggestions: Vampires and Dracula (Bride of), Werewolves, Frankenstein, Zombies, goblins, trolls, witches, Medusa, Ghosts. Artists to research: Hieronymous Bosch (especially his images of grotesques and Hell.) H. R. Giger. Ralph Steadman (Gonzo), Anna Maria Pacheco, Gothic – (art, architecture, angel, clothes and beauty). Suggested images to collect: Insects, Reptiles, snakes, bats, owls and birds of prey, skulls, skeletons, gravestones and statues, gargoyles, Goths. 3. ‘NIGHTMARE’ SONG CD COVER Choose a pop song that has nightmares or monsters as a theme, and produce a painting/drawing/collage based on the title or lyrics. (It could include the singer/group.) Suggestions: ‘Scary Monsters’ by David Bowie. ‘Bat Out of Hell’ by Meat Loaf. ‘Monster Mash’ by Bobbie Boris Picket. ‘Headcut’ , ‘Halloween’ & ‘Voodoo Dolly’ by Siouxsie and the Banshees (most of their songs have an evil supernatural theme),’ Beautiful Freak’ by the Eels. Artists to research: Hieronymous Bosch (especially his images of grotesques and Hell.) H.R.Giger. Ralph Steadman (Gonzo), Anna Maria Pacheco, Teesha Moore, images of the chosen singer or group . Suggested images to collect: Tombstones, statues, graveyards, owls, bats, insects, spiders, masks, gothic architecture. YEAR 11 GCSE ART EXAM 2009 – Guidance Sheet 2 EXAM PAPER TOPIC – ‘INSECTS’) PROJECTS 1. INSECTPHOBIA Produce a painting or drawing, which could include collage, to portray the fear of insects or the fear of one particular species such as spiders (acrophobia). Suggestions: Illustrate the nursery rhyme ‘Little Miss Muffet’. Use the title ‘Black Widow Spider’ (she eats the men she mates with). Use the title ‘Creepy Crawlies’. Artists to research: Hieronymous Bosch (especially his images of Hell.) Giger. Ralph Steadman (Gonzo), Anna Maria Pacheco, Paula Rego, Teesha Moore. Suggested images to collect: Insects: spiders, flies, bugs, wasps, bees, dust mites, moths. 2. THE BUTTERFLY BALL Produce a painting or drawing, which could include collage, to illustrate the title or part of the story from ‘The Butterfly Ball’ book and songs. Artists to research: Alan Aldridge, Hieronymous Bosch (especially his ‘Garden of Earthly Delights’), Georgia O’Keefe, Teesha Moore. Suggested images to collect: Butterflies, Ladybirds, Hares, Grasshoppers, gnats. YEAR 11 GCSE ART EXAM 2009 – Guidance Sheet EXAM PAPER TOPIC – ‘RED’ PROJECTS 1. LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD Produce a painting or drawing to illustrate the fairy story, which has a nightmarish, evil and strange quality to it. Make it as scary as possible – the only limits are your imagination. Artists to research: Hieronymous Bosch (especially his images of grotesques and Hell.) H. R. Giger. Ralph Steadman (Gonzo), Anna Maria Pacheco, Dave McKean. Suggested images to collect: Wolves, trees, bark, leaves, plants (ivy, holly) owls. 2. ‘LOVE’ SONG CD COVER Choose a pop song that has a ‘love’ theme, and produce a painting or drawing (that could include collage work), based on the title or lyrics. (It could include the singer/group.) It should rely heavily on the colour red or pink. Remember that there are different kinds of love – passionate, unrequited, obsessive, dangerous, lost love, true love, forbidden love. Suggestions: ‘Love Cats’ by The Cure. ‘The First Cut is the Deepest’ by Rod Stewart. ‘What becomes of the Broken Hearted’ by Jimmy Ruffin’, ‘Kiss’ by Prince, ‘Wear My heart on My Sleeve’ by Gallagher and Lyle, ‘Devil Woman’ by Cliff Richard. ‘Slave to Love’ by Bryan Ferry. ‘Poison Arrow’ by ABC. ‘Fool for Love’ by Texas . Artists to research: Anna Maria Pacheco, Teesha Moore, Marc Chagall, ‘Computer Arts’ illustrators. Suggested images to collect: Cats, symbols of love such as roses, hearts, lips, flowers, bows and arrows, cupids, Eros, tattoos, fruit, strawberries, cherries, jesters (also known as fools), images of the chosen pop singer or group. YEAR 11 GCSE ART EXAM 2009 – Guidance Sheet EXAM PAPER TOPIC – ‘Bags and their contents’ PROJECTS 1) THE INSIDE OF YOUR BAG Produce a painting/drawing or mixed media piece to illustrate the contents of one of your bags. Contents of a bag can reveal a lot about the owners’ personality/ occupation/hobbies etc. Try making a list of the contents of one of your own bags. Make it as jam packed with objects as possible. EXAMPLES OF BAGS TO LOOK AT: ∑ Tool bag ∑ Medical bag ∑ Shopping bag ∑ Make-up bag ∑ Hand bag ∑ Sports bag ∑ School bag ∑ Travelling bag ∑ Artist’s case/bag etc…… Suggested artists: Audrey Flack, Wayne Thiebaud, Nandra Palmieri and any still life artists such as Paul Cezanne. Paint/draw the contents of a bag on the outside. The best material to use will be ‘old fashioned’ brown paper bags. Again think of what sort of bag it might be and how this reflects the person. Suggested artists: Audrey Flack, Wayne Thiebaud, Nandra Palmieri and any still life artists such as Paul Cezanne. Also look at fashion/bag designers. YEAR 11 2009 GCSE ART EXAM PREPARATION – TIMETABLE ‘SLEEP’, ‘RED’, ‘INSECT’ and ‘BAGS AND THEIR CONTENTS’ projects RESEARCH: 25 marks. Wednesday 11th February. Exam paper given out. Choose your exam project from the list of options. Brainstorm the theme to get ideas. (Use images as well as words). Google your ideas and collect images to draw. Research and print out relevant examples of artists’ work. Make sure that you choose a project that will interest you - you haven’t got time to change your mind. Choose a project and techniques that will show off your strengths.
HALF TERM: Saturday 14th – Sunday 22nd Feb. Get a women’s glossy magazine that has a good range of images, patterns, colours and textures for collage work, e.g. Elle, Vogue. Collect and print out ALL of your research images and artists’ work. Mount all of this work on A3 and label them. Bring all of this work into the first lesson back.
Wed. 25th Feb INITIAL IDEAS: 25 marks
Produce a series of collage ideas for your chosen theme. Arrange/compose objects and take photographs for the ‘BAGS’ project. Complete for homework. Wednesday 4th March. Initial drawings and paintings based on collages and images collected. Complete for homework.
DEVELOPMENT:
25 marks.
Begin to combine all your best ideas so far and add new ones as you progress. New drawings, paintings and collages. Continue for homework. Collect any lettering you may need to include in your experiments. Wednesday 18th March. Make final improvements to your experiments and developments. Begin to try out trail composition ideas. (Small examples) Wednesday 25th March. Complete your composition ideas. Show what will go into your final composition, the size and shape of your piece, and where everything will be placed on the page. Decide and show the colour scheme of everything that will go into the final piece. Decide and show which techniques you will be using on which bits of your final composition. Trace out your final composition ready to take into the exam. Prepare any lettering that you may want to include in your composition. Bring everything into the exam room with you next Tuesday, (31st March). ART EXAM 25 marks

Produce your final piece in the ten hours allocated. Make sure you have planned everything before entering the exam – your teacher won’t be able to help you once the exam starts. If you miss a preparation deadline or don’t do homework, you will have automatic after school detentions, until the required work is completed. Extra sessions will be held: Tuesdays, and Thursdays after school 3-15pm to 4-15pm in C6. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday dinnertimes in C6. If you want to gain a grade C or above it is strongly recommended that you attend some of these sessions to get help, advice and guidance from your teacher, and make use of the specialist art materials and equipment. Apart from the first preparation lesson on 11th February, NO ICT RESEARCH will be allowed in lessons. After this date it needs to be completed for homework or during extra sessions. EXAM RULES: This is now exam preparation so you will be working in SILENCE throughout lessons. If you are off task during preparation lessons, you will need to work through your break to rectify this. You will NOT be allowed to listen to your own MP3 during the PREPARATION, OR THE EXAM.
